As a junior,
Amber Druien '07 cemented her place among the greatest runners in the College's history after winning both the 800- and 1500-meter titles at the 2006 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Benedictine University May 25-27.
"All I heard was the fans," Druien said of her performance, and a crowd that showered her with chants of N-C-C during each race. "It was tremendous support."
Druien joined a select group of five other North Central woman track and field athletes to win an individual national championship. She also became the second Cardinal athlete to win two titles at the same meet. Patsy Cargill '95 accomplished the feet at the 1994 NCAA III Outdoor Championships, winning the 400 hurdles and 400 dash.
Druien cruised to a time of 4:28.03 in the 1500 and then clocked a 2:12.54 in the 800. Her 20 points helped the Cardinals place ninth as a team with 21.5 points.
"I just didn't want to get last," Druien said of her 800 title which came just over an hour after the 1500. "I gave it all I had and that was good enough. I also did that kind of a double at the conference championships, but that meet wasn't of this caliber."
