2010
Indoor 5,000-Meter Run (14:47.97)
Outdoor 10,000-Meter Run (30:15.91)
Kyle Brady '10 cemented two national championships with his victory in the 5,000-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, hosted by DePauw University. The senior won the individual title and sealed up the team crown for the Cardinals.
Brady hung in the back of the pack for the first two miles of the race before starting to make a move with under a mile to go. He gradually passed competitors until 400 meters remained, when only Brady and the State University of New York-Geneseo's Lee Berube were still in contention for the title. Brady out-kicked Berube over the final 100 meters, comfortably winning in 14:47.97.
"At the beginning of the race I was very tactical. That all paid off in the end when, with a mile to go another runner made a move. I finished eighth last year so obviously this was a big improvement," said Brady.
"When I came around the final turn I saw all my teammates and fans cheering and yelling like crazy. That gave me a big boost of adrenaline and propelled me to the championship."
Brady capped off his career with a second individual national title at 10,000 meters in the 2010 Outdoor National Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College. Once again, Brady's effort helped fuel a successful bid to bring the team title home to Naperville.
After biding their time in the middle of the pack for the first half of the race, Brady and teammate
Michael Spain '11 surged to the front and pushed the pace the rest of the way. The lead pack eventually was pared down to just three, as Amherst College's (Mass.) Daniel Murner gamely held on, and the two Cardinals blistered the last mile to put the race away.
Brady crossed the line first to claim his second national championship in 30:15.91, while Spain finished second in 30:21.54. After coming through the 5,000-meter point in 15:32, Brady finished the last 5,000 meters in 14:43, covering the final mile in 4:22.
"I was trying to stay patient and relax as long as I could," said Brady, also the indoor national champion at 5,000 meters. "At about three miles in, we made a move and kept switching off and working together. It worked out really well and we were able to finish strong."
Brady was the lynchpin in one of the rarest accomplishments in Division III history, as North Central became just the second institution to sweep the national cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field championships in the same academic year. Brady was the only Cardinal to compete in all three championships, also earning All-America honors in cross country.
