Dan Benton
Dan Benton '12 won the 400-meter dash at the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, impressively storming away from the field to add an individual title to the championship he won as a member of North Central's 4x400-meter relay team at the 2010 Indoor National Championships. Benton followed that up by capturing the 2012 Indoor National Championship in the 400-meter dash while tallying another national crown in the 4x400-meter relay.

After posting the fastest time in the qualifying heats, Benton reaffirmed his status as the top competitor in the event, moving into the lead at the start of the home stretch and steadily pulling away to win by nearly a half-second and break his own North Central record with a time of 46.84 seconds.

Benton's victory was one of four individual championships won by the Cardinals at the meet, which helped propel North Central to its sixth outdoor national title.

"I knew I was going to have to run faster than I ever have," said Benton, who had been the national runner-up twice indoors. "I just knew I had to do it for the team. The way (head coach Frank Gramarosso) trains us is to run our own race and not worry about times or other runners, and obviously it worked out."
