Oct. 21, 2008 – Augustana College scored two goals in the final eight minutes of play to steal the 2-1 victory over North Central College, Tuesday night in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin men's soccer match at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Pete Zimmerman (Fr., Oswego, Ill./Oswego) scored the lone Cardinal goal, his third of the season.
After a scoreless first half, Pete Zimmerman found the back of the net in the 66th minute off a Micah Melendrez (Jr., Dixon, Ill./Dixon) pass, to put the Cardinals in front 1-0. North Central would hold the lead until the 83rd minute when Pheng Xiong netted the equalizer for the Vikings. With the game looking to be headed into overtime, Xiong fed a long ball to Scott Wallner who scored with just 54 seconds remaining to seal the win for Augustana.
Mike McEvoy (Fr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) made three stops on the night in goal for North Central while Augustana's Mike Dolan recorded five saves to pick up the win.
Tuesday's game was the team's final home game of 2008, finishing the home slate with a 5-3 mark.
With the loss, North Central falls to 8-7 overall and 0-6 in CCIW play while Augustana improves to 6-8-1 overall and 1-5 in conference. The team concludes conference play on Monday, October 27, when they travel to nearby Wheaton College for a showdown with the 12th ranked Thunder.
