WHEATON, Ill. (Oct. 27, 2008) - Wheaton College scored a pair of goals in each half, downing North Central College 4-0 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin men's soccer match at Joe Bean Stadium.
Wheaton, ranked second in the Central Region, got off to a quick start with Zac Koons scoring seven minutes in on a header off a Matt Swartz feed. The Thunder would strike again in the 29th minute with a Stephen Mesko goal off a Joel DeLass assist to push their lead to 2-0.
In the 79th minute, a deflected goalkeeper clearance gave Zach Koons his second goal of the game, pushing the Thunder lead to 3-0. Just five minutes later, Jens Jorgenson would net a goal unassisted to conclude the scoring on the night. Wheaton outshot the Cardinals 28-16 in the game.
Mike McEvoy (Fr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) faced 11 shots on the night in goal, recording seven saves in 86 minutes of action. Phillip Klipp (Fr., Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) finished out the final four minutes in goal for the Cardinals, facing no shots on goal. Joe Selvaggio and Kit Carson combined for the shutout in goal for Wheaton, each playing a half. Selvaggio made the start and notched five saves while Carson recorded one save in relief.
With the loss, North Central falls to 8-8 overall and 0-7 in CCIW action while the Thunder improve to 13-3-2 and remain unbeaten at 5-0-1 in conference. The Cardinals travel to Mequon, Wis. on Thursday, October 30 for their final soccer match of the season against Concordia University Wisconsin, where the team will look to end the year with a winning mark for the first time since 1999.
