MEQUON, Wis. (Oct. 30, 2008) – A costly own goal eight minutes into overtime put the North Central College men's soccer team on the wrong end of a 2-1 non-conference game against Concordia University Wisconsin at Fitting Field.
Galin Stoykov (So., Sofia, Bulgaria/Elmhurst (Ill.) York) accounted for the Cardinals lone goal, his second of the season.
The Falcons opened up the scoring in the 16
th minute with a David Bringer goal off a Steve Samuel assist. The Cardinals would respond in the 25
th minute when Stoykov found the left corner to net the equalizer. The teams would head into the half still knotted at one apiece.
After a scoreless second 45, the game headed into overtime where the Falcons got the game-winner seven minutes and 50 seconds in off a Cardinal own goal. Concordia outshot North Central 19-8 in the game.
Phillip Klipp (Fr., Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) made his third start in goal for the Cardinals, making three saves before being replaced by
Mike McEvoy (Fr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) at halftime. McEvoy handled the final 53 minutes of the game, racking up two saves. Samuel Ische recorded two saves for the Falcons, logging all 98 minutes in the net.
It is the second straight season the Falcons have defeated the Cardinals in overtime. Concordia won last year's matchup at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 3-2, with the Falcons scoring the game winner nine minutes into overtime.
North Central ends the season with an 8-9 overall record, doubling last season's win total, while the Falcons improve to 12-6-1 with the win.
