NORTHFIELD, Minn. (Sept. 6, 2008) – Carleton College's Bobby Phillips netted the games lone goal in the 48th minute, as the Knights defeated North Central College, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game at Bell Field. Phillips goal ended the team's shutout streak and is the first goal allowed all season by the Cardinals. North Central had gone 317 minutes without yielding a goal, a streak spanning four games.
The teams ended the first 45 minutes deadlocked in a scoreless game with Carleton holding a 6-3 advantage in shots taken. The Knights came out of the gate strong in the second half, scoring just 2:46 in when Brian TenHoor executed a through ball to Phillips for the game winner. The Knights outshot the Cardinals 10-2 in the second half and 16-5 in the game while getting seven corner kicks to North Central's zero.
Mike McEvoy (Fr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) recorded a career-high six saves in the game for the Cardinals in the losing effort. McEvoy has allowed just one goal in his four career games for North Central. McEvoy's counterpart, Pete Semmer, had two saves for the Knights in 90 minutes of action, recording the shutout.
With the loss, North Central falls to 3-1 on the season while Carleton, ranked eighth in the West Region, remains perfect at 4-0. The team returns to the pitch on Friday, September 12, when they take on Mount Mercy College (Iowa) at 7:30 p.m. for the opening game of the Sal Vacarro Tournament at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
