ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Jan. 13, 2008) -Playing in their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin road game of the season, the North Central College women's basketball team let an 11-point second half lead slip away, having to rally from a four-point deficit to pull out the 67-60 win over host Augustana College, Tuesday night at the Carver Physical Education Center. Meghan McGuire (So., Elgin, Ill./Central) leading the way with a game-high 17 points.
Despite playing the majority of the half with the lead, North Central found themselves down one at halftime (25-24) after the Vikings closed out the half on a 7-0 run.
Gia Navarra (Sr., Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) hit a three to open up the second half, giving the Cardinals the lead once again. North Central would build a game-high 11-point lead with 13:13 remaining before the Vikings mounted a 19-4 run, taking a four-point lead with 7:18 to play. With 3:36 to play, a McGuire jumper gave the visitors the 57-56 edge while a Viking turnover and a Brianne Parra (Sr., Justice, Ill./Argo) three point play put the Cardinals up four. North Central would never trail the remainder of the game, holding on for the seven point road victory.
McGuire ended the night eight-for-12 from the floor with 17 points to lead the Cardinal scoring effort while Parra and Navarra chipped in 16 and 10 points, respectively. Jackie Errico (So., Blue Island, Ill./ Marian Catholic) posted a game-high nine rebounds along with eight points while Amber Cibrario (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) finished with team-highs in both assists and steals with three and four. North Central shot 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the floor in the game, including shooting an even 50 percent (16-for-32) in the second half while limiting the Vikings to just 38.6 percent for the game.
Kristen Fox led the Vikings with 17 points and four steals while Natalie Runge added 14 points. Lani Kasten led Augustana on the boards with six while also chipping in eight points.
For the third time this season, North Central won the turnover battle (19 to 23). The Cardinals are a perfect 3-0 in games when winning the turnover battle.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in CCIW action while the Vikings fall to 2-12 on the season and 0-3 in conference. North Central has now won nine of the last 10 games between the two schools. North Central returns to action on Friday, January 16, making the short trip to Faganel Hall to take on Elmhurst College.
