Cardinals Close Out CCIW Schedule With Shutout Win

The North Central College volleyball team played the final match of its College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin schedule on Tuesday, sending its seniors off in style with a 3-0 whitewash of the Augustana College Vikings at Gregory Arena.

The Cardinals (28-3, 6-1 CCIW) were not seriously threatened in any of the three sets that were played, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14.

North Central trailed early in the opening set but put together a 10-1 run on the serve of Stephanie Ryding to pull ahead to a comfortable lead. Jenae Harner finished with six kills in the first frame, while Ryding turned in nine digs. The Cardinals led throughout the second set, leading by at least six points for the entire second half of play. The host team then broke open a close third set with a 6-0 run on the serve of Anna Wirtz.

Harner finished the evening with a match-high 14 kills, hitting .345. Ryding totaled 17 digs and three service aces, while Christy Hermann and Ali Briner each turned in two solo blocks. Alyssa Lantz tallied 17 assists and Ryan Lally added 12.

The Cardinals will participate in the Benedictine University Tournament on Friday. The tournament will be played at North Central due to renovations to the BU athletic facilities. Action will begin at 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
