Oct. 3, 2009 -- Nico Galto struck twice on the afternoon, guiding the North Central College men's soccer squad to the 3-2 overtime victory over Millikin University in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The sophomore accounted for the team's final two goals of the game, including the overtime winner in the 95th minute.
Millikin opened up the scoring just six minutes into the game with Reid Butts bending the ball past the keeper. The visitor's lead proved to be short-lived as the Cardinals equalized the score 56 seconds later after
Micah Melendrez converted on a penalty kick. North Central would strike again just two minutes before halftime with
Nico Galto launching a shot just outside the box on a breakaway, giving the home side the 2-1 advantage after the first 45 minutes of action.
Matt Laude converted on a penalty kick in the 87th minute, tying the game at 2-2 to send the game into overtime.
Galto emerged as the overtime hero, scoring the game-winner in the 95th minute off a set piece as Melendrez fed him the ball.
With the win, North Central improves to 5-6 overall while evening its conference record to 1-1 while Millikin falls to 4-6-1 and 0-1 in CCIW action. The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, October 6, taking on the Bluejays of Elmhurst College at 7 p.m. inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
