LISLE, Ill. (Sep. 1, 2009)-- An early goal proved to be the difference-maker as host Benedictine University slipped past North Central College, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at the Village of Lisle/Benedictine University Sports Complex.
The Eagles found the back of the net in the eighth minute on a corner kick with Ryan Kozin scoring off a feed from Cesar Martinez. The goal proved to be the only scoring in a game that saw the Cardinals dominate statistically, out-shooting the hosts 18-5, including holding a 9-1 edge in the second stanza while also holding a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks taken.
Mike McEvoy logged all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinals, stopping three shots in the losing effort while Jim Hanley picked up the shutout win after recording six saves on the night.
With the loss, North Central falls to 0-1 on the young season while Benedictine improves to 1-0. The Cardinals return to action tomorrow, when they welcome Hamline University (Minn.) to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium for the team's home opener. Kickoff for Wednesday's game is slated for 5 p.m.
