Sep. 5, 2009-- Micah Melendrez scored two goals on the afternoon, including the deciding goal in double overtime, guiding North Central College to the, 3-2, upset win over the 14th-ranked Carleton College (Minn.) Knights in a non-conference men's soccer match at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

Carleton got on the board in the 26th minute after Ryan Cammarota slipped a pass through the Cardinal defense to Wes Elfman for the score. The visiting Knights would go into the locker room at half with the 1-0 lead, outshooting North Central 12-3.

The Cardinals wasted little time in the second half, drawing a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick for Melendrez. Melendrez's initial shot was blocked by the keeper before the senior forward collected the rebound and drove it home for the equalizer in the 46th minute. The Cardinals would strike again in the 86th minute with Pete Zimmerman scoring off an assist by Griffin Orlopp.

The lead proved to be short lived as the Knights' Ross Hamilton knotted the score at two apiece in the 88th minute, sending the game into overtime.

In the game's second overtime, Melendrez struck again, scoring off a free kick after a Knight defender got send off with a red card in the 103rd minute.

Phillip Klipp, seeing his first action in goal all season, recorded a career-high 15 saves on the afternoon for the win. Klipp had just 13 saves in his career heading into the game.

With the win, North Central improves to 1-2 overall while Carleton falls to 0-2 on the season. The Cardinals return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 8, making the trek to Chicago to face Moody Bible Institute. Kickoff for the game is slated for 4 p.m.
