The North Central College men's soccer team suffered a third straight close loss in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play on Saturday, as a late goal allowed the Wheaton College Thunder to escape Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium with a 1-0 victory.

Despite getting outshot in the first half, 10-2, the Cardinals (4-7-3, 0-3-1 CCIW) were able to keep Wheaton out of the goal due to excellent communication among its defensive players and authoritative play by goalkeeper Phillip Klipp. North Central was able to manufacture some offensive opportunities in the second period, squeezing off three shots on goal, but continued to be turned away as the game headed into the final minutes.

After a pair of narrow misses midway through the second half, the Thunder (6-6-3, 4-0 CCIW) finally broke through with 8:13 left in regulation, as Drew Golz found the net off a pass from Cameron Risma. North Central got two shots off in their attempt to secure an equalizer, but were unsuccessful on both attempts.

The Cardinals host Concordia University (Wis.) on Monday at 7 p.m.
