Dec. 18, 2010 - The North Central College wrestling team posted two wins in their final home appearance of the 2010 calendar year on Saturday, as the 24th-ranked Cardinals went 2-1 in the North Central Quadrangular meet at Gregory Arena.
North Central opened with a 52-0 shutout of Wheaton College, then lost a 24-12 decision to 10th-ranked Cornell College (Iowa) before bouncing back to defeat Heidelberg University (Ohio), 23-17.
Five of the Cardinals' wrestlers, Nick Santos at 125 pounds, Nathan Fitzenreider at 133, Andrew Zobac at 141, Billy Malone at 184, and Andrew Bradley at 197, accept forfeits in the Wheaton match. Eric Oyster opened the competition at 149, posting a 7-2 decision over Casey Krahn.
Joby Bodi followed with a victory at 157, defeating Matthew Cordell by technical fall, 15-0. Danny Deufel defeated Cameron Fox by major decision (12-3) at 165 and Greg Schroeder did the same against Matt Fenlason at 174 (15-3). Adam Kendall closed out the match by pinning Wheaton's Jason Geick in the second period.
After falling behind with a loss at 125 against Cornell, Fitzenreider put the Cardinals in front by pinning Michael Buhr with 29 seconds remaining in the match. Zobac followed with a 4-3 victory over seventh-ranked Kevin Donahue at 141, but the Rams won six of the last seven matches to secure the victory. Malone posted the Cardinals' other match win, defeating Andrew Roberts, 5-3, at 184.
North Central won the first six matches against Heidelberg to build an insurmountable lead before the Student Princes won the final four bouts. Santos defeated Devin Mazik, 7-2, at 125, Fitzenreider pinned Brandon Montgomery in 1:13, Zobac won a 15-8 decision against Ben Kieffer, Oyster won by technical fall over Andrew Johnson (19-3), and Bodi won a 10-4 decision over Sean Pincura before Jason Bonham defeated Justin Wharton, 2-1, at 165.
Zobac is now 21-1 this season, while Malone is 20-4 and Fitzenreider remains unbeaten at 14-0.
The Cardinals are idle until the Midlands Championships at Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30.
