Box Score
Sept. 11, 2010-- Three goals in a 12-minute span powered top-ranked Calvin College past North Central College, 3-0, Saturday night in a non-conference men's soccer game at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Cardinals (2-2-1) and Knights (4-0-0) battled back and forth for the opening 30 minutes of play before a Kurt Van Sickel goal in the 33rd minute opened up a 12-minute Calvin scoring binge. The opening score came on a free kick as Dan Kmetz tapped the ball to Van Sickel who blasted a shot into the back of the net. Calvin would double its lead in the 43rd minute as Chris Nance fed Zach Willis for the score before a Van Sickel corner kick set up a header goal by Joe Broekhuizen in the 45th minute in what turned out to be the final score of the night.
The Knights, ranked No. 1 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, held a 15-5 advantage in shots in the opening half of play while firing off just six in the second half to North Central's five attempts.
Phillip Klipp logged all 90 minutes in goal, making four stops while Calvin's Ryan Bratt recorded three saves before giving way to Michael Dolan in the 71st minute.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Sept. 18, hosting Eureka College in the opening round of the 23rd annual Sal Vaccaro Tournament. Kick off is slated for 6 p.m. as North Central looks to claim its third consecutive Sal Vaccaro Title and 11th overall.
