Sept. 27, 2010 -
North Central College linebacker Matt Wenger and punter Shaun Wild have been honored as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Defensive and Special Teams Football Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Sept. 25.

The duo earned their accolades on the strength of their performances in the Cardinals' 20-6 victory over the then-No. 17-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday. Wenger turned in 13 tackles, seven of which were solo stops, along with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup, while Wild averaged 38.2 yards on five punts and allowed UW-Eau Claire to gain just 12 punt return yards.

Wenger was a three-time CCIW Player of the Week as a junior in 2008, in addition to earning American Football Coaches Association All-America and CCIW Defensive Player of the Year honors, before missing last season due to injury. Wild also received a Player of the Week nod last season.

North Central now has three CCIW Player of the Week honorees this season. Wide receiver Steve Hlavac was named the CCIW's Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 18.

North Central hosts Carthage on Saturday in the CCIW opener for both teams. Kickoff at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. North Central's campus radio station, 89.1-FM WONC, will carry the game live, and live in-game statistics can be accessed at northcentralcardinals.com.
