ELMHURST, Ill. (Jan. 18, 2012) - The North Central College wrestling team was denied in its bid for a third straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin dual win on Wednesday, as Elmhurst College dominated late and pulled away for a 34-11 victory at R.A. Faganel Hall.
The Cardinals (5-9) won three of the first five matches, but Elmhurst emerged and won the final five bouts, four of which came by pin, to improve to 3-0 against CCIW competition.
Nathan Fitzenreider opened the evening with a major-decision win for North Central at 125 pounds, posting a 9-0 win over Mark Johnson. The win gives Fitzenreider (24-4) a total of 110 wins in his collegiate career, seventh-most in the program's history. Elmhurst's Dalton Bullard evened the score with 10-2 major-decision victory over Brayan Gonzalez, though Andrew Zobac put the Cardinals in front once again with a a 17-7 major decision over Jake Denhof at 141.
The Bluejays' Ryan Earley narrowed the gap to 8-7 after defeating Eric Oyster by decision, 10-5, at 149, but Joby Bodi nudged North Central back in front with an 11-6 decision victory over Tom Jung at 157.
The Cardinals' Devin Milheim owned an 11-5 advantage in his match against Mike Ryan at 165 before giving up a pin with just 20 seconds left in the first period. The win started Elmhurst on a run of five straight bouts and wound up sending the Bluejays to the victory.
North Central travels to Crawfordsville, Ind., for the Wabash College Max Servies Duals on Saturday. Action is scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m. local time.
