Oct. 13, 2012 - Saturday was a historic day at Gregory Arena for the North Central College volleyball team, as the Cardinals posted a record-breaking win on the second day of the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament.
North Central's 3-0 victory over Aurora University in Saturday's first match was the 267th in the tenure of head coach
Karen Bunkenburg, establishing a new career coaching record for the Cardinals' program. The previous record of 266 was set by Marcy Thurwachter, who coached the team from 1985-97.
"It feels great!" Bunkenburg said of the accomplishment. "It means a lot to me, but as I told the girls, 'This happens because of you.'"
The Cardinals (21-6) won by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-18 despite hitting into an Aurora frontline which recorded 11 blocks in the contest. North Central turned the tide by amping up its own defensive pressure, allowing the Spartans (8-16) to hit just .030 in the match.
Jenae Harner put up a match-high 12 kills for the Cardinals, while
Laura Kluk totaled 36 assists and
Jessie Fiala contributed a career-best three service aces.
Sarah Eggert added 16 digs.
