WINNECONE, Wis. (Nov. 10, 2012) – For the fifth consecutive season, the North Central College men's cross country squad claimed the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship, cruising past the 39-team field at Lake Breeze Golf Course.
The third-ranked Cardinals amassed 58 total team points, claiming the 25
th regional title in program history and downing runner-up, sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a 56 point margin. Ninth-ranked Washington University finished third with 135 points, followed by fellow College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe, 13
th-ranked Wheaton College (140) and seventh-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (145), rounded out the top-five.
The University of Wisconsin-Stout's Tim Nelson won the individual title, finishing the 8,000-meter race in 24:24.67, less than two seconds ahead of the Cardinal's
Yonatan Mascote (24:26.30) and
Daniel Kerley (24:26.88), finishing in second and third, respectively.
Roger Klein finished just outside the top-ten, crossing the tape in 24:47.12, good for 11
th-place, while
John Crain ended in 17
th-place with a time of 24:57.53 and
Tim Hird rounded out the team scoring with a 25
th-place finish in 25:09.62.
Freshman
Troy Kelleher finished in 27
th, clocking a time of 25:10.24 and
Ryan Root completed the course in 25:42.96, finishing in 53
rd-place.
North Central will focus its attention on next weekend's NCAA Division III National Championship hosted at Lavern Gibson Championship Course, in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
