Jan. 12, 2013 – Snapping a three-game skid to open College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play, the North Central College women's basketball team hung on for a 105-98 victory over Augustana College, Saturday night inside Gregory Arena.
The opening 17 minutes of play was a see-saw battle featuring six lead changes and three ties before North Central went on a 12-3 run to close out the first half. The Cardinal run was powered by back-to-back three-pointers from
Kelsey Cooling and
Callie Rezin, giving the hosts a 55-46 lead at the intermission.
The Cardinals (8-7, 1-3 CCIW) started the second half on a 9-2 run, increasing its advantage to 66-48 behind a three from
Jenny Swanson and a pair of
Larynn Shumaker lay-ups.
The North Central offense continued to stretch the Viking deficit, opening up a 21-point lead at the 10:55 mark as
Sophie Newson drained one from beyond the arch followed by a free-throw from
Bobbi Johns.
The Vikings (5-9, 1-3 CCIW) fought back through the game's final ten minutes but the Cardinal defense held strong for the seven-point victory.
Five Cardinals finished in double-figure scoring led by
Larynn Shumaker's 20 points.
Maryssa Cladis added 13,
Kimberly Wilson and
Jenny Swanson finished the night with 12 points each and
Callie Rezin chipped in 10.
Augustana was led by Chaney Tambling's 18 points while Molly Etheridge finished with a double-double adding 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
North Central travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on Jan. 16 with tip-off slated for 7:30 pm at the Shirk Center.
