Chicago, Ill. (Jan. 19, 2013) – The North Central College women's basketball team led by as many as 13 late in the second half, and withstood a furious rally from North Park University to earn their second conference victory, 102-101, at North Park Gymnasium Saturday.
The Cardinals (9-8, 2-4) grabbed a 100-92 advantage with just 2:39 remaining on two free throws by
Callie Rezin, who led the visitors with 19 points. Dana Christensen and Kayla McCall hit back-to-back threes to draw the home team to within two with 1:31 left.
The Vikings (12-5, 3-3) got the ball back after a missed jumper by
Michelle Todd, but Annie Shain missed a three-pointer with a chance to take the lead.
North Central tried to put the game out of reach with a three by
Paula Elum, but
Emily Murphy grabbed a huge offensive rebound to keep possession.
Bobbi Johns calmly sank two straight free throws to give the Cardinals a 102-98 lead with just 18 seconds left.
However, the Vikings didn't go away as McCall sank another huge three with four seconds showing. After the hosts called timeout, North Central inbounded the ball and ran out the clock for the victory.
Larynn Shumaker also reached double figures with 13 and
Kelsey Cooling netted 14 points after sinking 3-of-4 from downtown.
Lauren Hernandez also drained three three-pointers on her way to 10 points.
The Vikings used a balanced scoring effort with all five starters reaching double digits, led by Shaina Yalda with 16.
The Cardinals head to Decatur, Ill. on Wednesday night when they take on Millikin University at 7:30 p.m.
