The North Central College women's basketball team was unable to muster a second half comeback en route to an 85-74 loss at the hands of Carthage College, Wednesday night in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup.

The Cardinals (7-7, 0-3 CCIW) jumped out to an early double-digit lead less than five minutes into the game, fueled by three-pointers from Sophie Newson and Jenny Swanson to give the hosts the early 15-4 advantage.

Over the next five minutes Carthage would put together a 21-7 run of its own, taking a three-point lead at the 10:00 mark of the opening half and would not surrender the lead the remainder of the contest.

The Lady Reds (11-3, 3-0 CCIW) opened up an eight-point lead right before half as Erin Quinn hit a jumper, followed by an easy two from Kristi Schmidt down low to give Carthage a 45-37 halftime lead.

The Cardinals held tight throughout the second half, at one point drawing within one point of the Carthage lead after jumpers by Sophie Newson and Marion Boeck narrowed the margin 70-69.

Carthage proved to be too much to overcome down the stretch, pulling away with the double-digit victory.

Two Lady Reds finished with double-doubles as Michelle Wenzel led all scorers with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Cailee Corcoran ended the night with 15 points and 24 rebounds.  Kristi Schmidt and Stephanie Kuzmanic also finished in double-figures with 20 and 13 points, respectively.

Newson led the Cardinals with 11 points while Jenny Swanson and Larynn Shumaker each added nine.

North Central is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12, taking on Augustana College.  Tip-off at Gregory Arena is slated for 5 p.m.
