CHICAGO, Ill. (Oct. 1, 2013) – After dropping its first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match last Tuesday, the North Central College volleyball team bounced back and beat North Park University on the road Monday night to earn its first conference victory.
North Central (8-13, 1-1) won a tightly contested opening set in which neither team led by more than four points, and featured six lead changes. Down 26-25, and facing match point, a kill by
Laura Kluk knotted the score at 26. The Vikings Shelby Switzer answered with a kill of her own to regain the lead. An attack error by Lesley Shulman tied the score and a ball handling error by the hosts gave North Central a one point advantage, 28-27. Another attack error by North Park clinched the first set for the Cardinals.
In the second set, North Central couldn't overcome an eight point run by North Park that blew open a 14-14 tie. The visitors rebounded to win the third set 26-24, and took a 2-1 advantage after two more errors by the Vikings broke a late 24-24 tie.
The Cardinals blew away the Vikings in the fourth and final set. After falling behind 4-2, North Central went on a 14-4 run to open up a 16-8 lead and cruised to victory 25-17.
The Cardinals were led by
Kedryn Orrison's 12 kills and
Amanda Walker added nine. Kluk passed out 30 assists and had seven kills of her own, while
Casey Greene produced a career-high five service aces.
North Central takes a week off and returns home to face Wheaton College next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
