Oct. 19, 2013 – The North Central College men's soccer team notched its first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) victory of the season Saturday night, hanging on to defeat Augustana College inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
In a game which five yellow cards, three red cards and 37 total fouls, the physicality began from the opening kickoff. Just 38 seconds into the contest, a Cardinal was taken down just outside the Augustana box resulting in a North Central free kick.
Ricardo Serrano drove one just inside the right post, giving the Cardinals (6-5-3, 1-3-0 CCIW) an early 1-0 lead.
North Central outshot the Vikings (5-8-1, 0-4-0 CCIW) by an 8-2 margin, while taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half,
Jake Muszczynski increased the Cardinal advantage 2-0 in the 57
th minute, chipping one past Augustana goalkeeper Brett Johnson off a long lead pass from
Jeff Jones.
The Vikings made a game of it late, as Matt Shipon cut the Cardinal lead in half with just under four minutes remaining in regulation, but the Cardinal defense held off the Viking attack to secure the 2-1 victory.
Kyle DeRaedt improves to 6-5-3 on the season, stopping two shots on the evening.
North Central wraps up non-conference play Wednesday, Oct. 22, travelling to the University of Dubuque. Kickoff at Oyen Field is slated for 7 pm.
