LISLE, Ill. (Nov. 1, 2013) – The North Central College volleyball team dropped matches this afternoon to the No. 19-ranked University of Chicago and DePauw University on the first day of the Benedictine University Eagle Classic.
The Maroons didn't have much trouble in the opening set, as they dominated the Cardinals (10-21) by a 25-8 score. North Central didn't back down though and led 11-7 in the early going of the second set. Chicago closed the gap to 13-11 and the match remained within two points until the Maroons pulled out a 26-24 win on a kill by Maren Loe.
Down 2-0, North Central battled back to win the third set. With the Cardinals leading just 19-18, a kill by
Sarah Eggert stretched the Cardinal advantage to 20-18. The Maroons closed the gap to 20-19 on an attack error by Eggert. A service error by Chicago gave the serve back to the Cardinals, and a kill by
Brittany Tickner increased the lead to 22-19. The Cardinals scored their third straight point on an ace by
Annie Wegrzyn, and
Bridget White provided the final two kills to clinch the Cardinal win, 25-21.
In the next set, North Central held an early 8-7 lead, but the Maroons rattled off 18 of the next 21 points to cruise to a 25-11 victory in the clincher.
Amanda Hilmer led the way with eight kills and
AnnMarie Bachmann matched her season-high with seven.
Jessie Fiala recorded 24 digs and
Laura Kluk registered 31 assists. Wegrzyn also dug out a season-high 10 balls.
DePauw took three straight sets from North Central in the second match of the day. The Tigers won 25-20, 25-19, and 25-18.
Amanda Walker led the offense with seven kills and
Katie Connolly stepped into the setter position and added 15 assists. Fiala led the team with six digs.
The Cardinals finish the non-conference portion of their schedule tomorrow in the second day of the tournament. North Central takes on Lawrence University at 10:00 a.m. and close the day with Concordia University Chicago at 2:00 p.m.
