NOTRE DAME, Ind. (Dec. 7, 2013) – The North Central College women's basketball team won in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon over Saint Mary's College (Ind.), thanks in part to a game-winning three-pointer from
Maryssa Cladis with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation.
Trailing 87-81 with 1:42 remaining in the game, North Central closed out the contest on a 9-2 run, as
Bobbi Johns layed in one of her nine points before
Larynn Shumaker knocked down a pair of free-throws and followed with another layup, knotting the score 87-87.
The Gaels (2-6) took an 89-87 lead off a jumper by Heather Pesigan with 21 seconds remaining in the contest, but on the Cardinals next trip down the court Cladis nailed what would be the game winning three-pointer as the North Central defense held up over the final 11 seconds en route to a 90-89 victory.
The Cardinals (4-2) trailed throughout the opening half, at one point staring at a 13-point deficit at the 10:37 mark, but North Central slowly chipped away at the Gael advantage as Johns capped off the first half scoring, connecting on a three-point play to tie the score 45-45 just before halftime.
Shumaker paced the Cardinal scoring attach with 15 points and six rebounds, while Cladis finished with 13 and
DeJa Moore added 13 points and five assists.
Marion Boeck also finished in double-figures with a career-high 10 points.
Shanlyn Bias led the Gaels with a game-high 20 points, while Krista Knapke finished the afternoon with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
North Central is back in action Dec. 14, traveling to Dubuque University with tip-off slated for 3 pm.
