KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Aug. 31, 2013) – The North Central College volleyball team opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Manchester University, but was defeated 3-1 in the nightcap by the host of the weekend tournament Kalamazoo College.
North Central (1-2) and Manchester split the first two sets on Saturday morning before the Cardinals cruised to a 25-17 third set win, and squeaked out a 25-23 win in the fourth set to earn the 3-1 victory.
Laura Kluk did a little bit of everything in the first match. She led the team in kills (15) and digs (21) and tied for the team lead in assists with
Danielle Williams with 15.
Kedryn Orrison added nine kills, while
Jessie Fiala chipped in 17 digs.
In the second match of the day, North Central and Kalamazoo played to an early 4-4 tie in the first set, but the Hornets rattled off eight of the next nine points to grab momentum and a 12-5 advantage to cruise to a 25-15 victory.
The Hornets scored the final five points of the second set to break a 20-20 tie and take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Cardinals battled back from a 24-21 hole in the third set and rattled off five consecutive points to win the third set.
Danielle Williams collected the final two kills for the Cardinals to clinch the victory.
North Central came close to pushing the contest to a fifth set, but Kalamazoo used another late rally to score six straight points and earn a 26-24 victory.
Williams led the Cardinals with 14 kills while Orrison also reached double figures with 10. Kluk handed out 31 assists and had 13 digs, and Fiala led the team with another 17 digs.
Kalamazoo went perfect over the weekend to win the tournament, and based on her performance Kluk was named to the all-tournament team.
North Central plays again on Friday Sept. 6 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7:00 p.m.
