RIVER FOREST, Ill. (Sept. 21, 2012) – The North Central College volleyball squad completed the Concordia University Chicago Fall Invitational today with a split. The Cardinals dropped a match to Dominican University, 3-0, before bouncing back to beat Concordia Chicago 3-0.
Against Dominican, in the opening set, North Central tied the score at 18 on a kill by
Amanda Walker, but the Stars rattled off seven consecutive points including three service aces by Carri Chambers. The second set brought more of the same as the Cardinals led 21-20. However, Chambers added two kills as Dominican scored the set's final five points.
In the final set,
Kedryn Orrison's kill late in the game tied the score at 20 before the Stars scored the next three points.
Amanda Hilmer's seventh kill of the match drew the Cardinals closer at 23-21, but after the teams traded points, an attack error by Walker sealed North Central's fate.
Orrison led the attack with eight kills, and Hilmer and Walker both added seven apiece.
Laura Kluk had 29 assists and three service aces and
Jessie Fiala led the defense 14 digs.
In the closer, North Central turned a 9-7 deficit into a 25-17 victory in the opening set. The Cardinals earned a wire-to-wire victory in the second set, and defeated the Cougars 25-20 in the third and final set of the tournament.
Orrison and Walker both collected eight kills against the hosts. Kluk passed out an additional 35 assists, and her and
Sarah Eggert both contributed two service aces. Walker led the team with three total blocks, while Fiala dug out another nine balls.
North Central's next match will be its home opener against the No. 4-ranked Elmhurst College Bluejays at Merner Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
