RIVER FOREST, Ill. (Sept. 21, 2012) – The North Central College volleyball team improved to 5-8 overall after defeating Purdue University Calumet and Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Friday at the Concordia University Chicago Fall Invitational.
The Cardinals (5-8) were led by
Amanda Hilmer's 11 kills in the opening match against Purdue Calumet. North Central defeated the Peregrines in four sets, 25-19, 28-26, 22-25, and 25-14.
Amanda Walker added eight kills and two blocks, and
Amy Hermle produced a team-high five blocks.
Laura Kluk passed out 45 assists to go with 17 digs.
In the second match of the day, North Central rallied to win three consecutive sets after dropping the opener to Maranatha Baptist to defeat the Crusaders by a 3-1 margin.
Maranatha took an early 5-0 lead in the second set, but the Cardinals answered with six points of its own to take a 6-5 lead. After tying the score at 10, North Central took control by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to cruise to a 25-16 victory.
The Cardinals squeaked out a 26-24 win in the third set, and withstood a late Crusader charge in the clincher to win 25-21.
Once again, it was Hilmer that led the offensive attack for North Central by tying a season-high with 16 kills to go with a career best four blocks. Walker and
Kedryn Orrison both reached double figure kills as well, with 13 and 11, respectively. Feeding the hitters was Kluk who finished with a season-best 50 assists, while
Jessie Fiala chipped in 24 digs.
The Cardinals are back at it again this afternoon at Concordia. North Central takes on Dominican University at 12:00 p.m. and the host Concordia Chicago at 2:00 p.m. Follow all the live action at :
