Sept. 6, 2013 -- It was a tail of two halves Friday night under the lights at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium as the North Central College men's soccer team cruised past Albion College in the opening game of the Sal Vaccaro Tournament, thanks in part to six second half goals.
It was a defensive struggle in the opening 45 minutes as both teams headed into halftime knotted 0-0. The North Central defense held the Britons (2-1-0) to just one shot in the opening frame, while the Cardinals (2-1-0) were only able to get off a pair of shots, both off the foot of
Ricardo Serrano.
The Cardinals came out soaring in the second half as
Joey Faleni broke open the scoreless tie in the 51
st minute, heading his second goal of the season home off a
Jake Johnson corner kick.
Less than ten minutes later,
Matt Koth poked home the Cardinals second goal of the game off a rebounded shot off the foot of
Ryan Johnson, giving North Central a 2-0 lead.
In the 66
th minute, the Cardinals struck again as freshman
Chandler Olah recorded his first collegiate score, finding the back of the net on a header after a Serrano corner kick.
A little over seven minutes later, Olah struck again as he took a pass off from
Nick Tiedt and drove through the Briton defense for his second goal of the contest.
The Cardinals opened up a 5-0 advantage in the 76
th minute as
Charlie Stanke joined the scoring barrage, sending home a laser from 25 yards out.
After Albion got on the board in the 78
th minute, North Central's
Steven Walcott connected on his first goal as a Cardinal off a corner kick from Stanke, giving North Central a decisive 6-1 lead.
Kyle DeRaedt earns his second victory of the season in goal making one save, while Albion's Andrew Bobowski recorded four saves in the losing effort.
North Central is back in action tomorrow, Sept. 7, playing host to Adrian College (Mich.) in the second game of the Sal Vaccaro Tournament at 7:30 pm.
