Sept. 7, 2013 – In the final game of the Sal Vaccaro Tournament, the North Central College men's soccer team hung on for a 2-1 victory over Adrian College (Mich.), Saturday night at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Cardinals (3-1) got on the board first in the sixth minute as
Michael Lenzi connected off a
Ricardo Serrano corner kick, his first goal of the season, giving the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.
North Central increased its lead 2-0 just after play resumed in the second period as
Charlie Stanke found the back of the net for his second goal of the young season, once again off a pass from Serrano.
The Bulldogs (1-2-1) fought back late in the second half as Jakub Kanicki cut the Cardinal lead in half in the 78
th minute, but the North Central defense held off the Adrian attack to claim its third straight Sal Vaccaro Tournament championship.
North Central outshot the Bulldogs by a 20-10 margin and held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Kyle DeRaedt improves to 3-1-0 on the season, making two saves on the night.
North Central returns to action Thursday, Sept. 12, travelling down the road to Benedictine University at 7 pm.
