Jan. 29, 2014 – Avenging a loss in the opening meeting of the season, the North Central College women's basketball team was able to knock off Augustana College, 97-85 in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup inside Gregory Arena, thanks in part to 10 second half three-pointers.
North Central trailed 37-32 at halftime, shooting just 28 percent from the field in the opening half, including just 5 of 27 shooting from three-point range.
The North Central offense came alive in the second half as the Cardinals (10-9, 3-5 CCIW) chipped away at the lead over the first three minutes and took its first lead of the half on a
Maryssa Cladis three, taking a 46-44 advantage with just over 16 minutes to play.
Over the next three minutes the Cardinals went on a 12-4 run, highlighted by a pair of long balls from
Marion Boeck and another off the hand of
Miranda Grizaffi, to take a 58-48 lead.
The Vikings (5-14, 1-7 CCIW) went on a run of its own midway through the half, a 10-0 run to tie the contest 66-66 led by eight of Chaney Tambling's game-high 21 points with 8:50 remaining on the clock.
North Central responded with the game's pivotal run, a 12-2 stretch over the next two and a half minutes as Cladis nailed two of her four three-pointers, followed by a steal by Boeck leading to an easy layup by
Uzuri Williams on the other end to give the Cardinals a 78-68 advantage.
The Cardinals led by as many as 15 down the stretch as Williams and
Larynn Shumaker each had 13 points on the evening.
Lauren Hernandez finished with 12 points and seven assists, while Cladis and
Anita Sterling added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
North Central is back in action Saturday, Feb. 1, hosting 10
