(Jan. 7, 2014) – In the opening dual of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin season, Augustana College, ranked 29th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, defeated  North Central College 24-18 at Gregory Arena on Tuesday night.

Despite the teams splitting the ten matches, the Vikings (10-3, 1-0) earned the victory because they were able to pin the Cardinals (4-5, 0-1) three times, with Nathan Segal recorded the only fall for the home team.

Nick Santos (12-8) and Layten Binion (20-4) got the Cardinals off to an early 6-0 start after they both picked up decisions.  The 125-pound Santos took down Jimmy Panozza with 41 seconds remaining in the final period to secure a 3-2 victory, while Binion cruised to a 9-3 win over Sean McMahon at 133 pounds.

After Isaiah Schaub pinned Andrew Rodawold (14-9) at 141 pounds to tie the match at six, Segal (20-8) recorded his fourth pin of the season to return the favor at 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, Josh Tardy (20-6) increased the Cardinal lead to 15-6 with an 8-6 triple overtime decision over Kevin Sundberg.
However the Vikings rallied, and won four of the final five matches including pins by Jordan Richardson and Thomas Reyhons to complete the comeback.

Casey Greenberg (3-5) recorded the Cardinals final victory of the evening with an 8-2 decision over Hunter Feraco at 197 pounds.

North Central heads to the Manchester University Spartan Mat Classic on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
