Oct. 10, 2014 – The North Central College women's volleyball team turned in a decisive 3-0 victory in the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament opener over St. Mary's University (Minn.) inside Gregory Arena.
With the score knotted at 12 midway through the first set, the Cardinals (15-4) claimed six of the next eight points highlighted by a kill and service ace by
Kedryn Orrison, giving the hosts a 18-14 lead and forcing a St. Mary's timeout.
North Central maintained the lead the down the stretch thanks in part to a key block and kill from
Amanda Walker, and capped off the 25-20 win with a service ace off the hand of
Olivia Hanley.
The turning point in set number two came late for the Cardinals, trailing a majority of the set, North Central battled back to tie the score 22-22. North Central faced set point three times but managed to rebound on each occasion, eventually putting together three straight kills from
Annie Wegrzyn,
Bridget White and Orrison to clinch the 27-25 win.
Set three was all North Central as the Cardinals led from the opening point and cruised to a 25-17 victory, while the St. Mary's (13-8) offense was only able to put together one three point scoring rally.
Cara Howell paced the Cardinal offense with a game-high 12 kills, Orrison added nine, while
Amanda Walker and
Julie Laugel each finished with eight and seven, respectively.
Laura Kluk finished with a game-high 38 assists, while
Jill Galovic notched 12 digs defensively.
North Central continues play tomorrow in the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament, squaring off against Wartburg College at 11 am, followed by North Park University at 1 pm.
