BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Oct. 18, 2014) – The North Central College women's tennis team closed out the fall season with a fourth-place finish at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
The Cardinals totaled 30 total team points over the three-day championship, as Wheaton College claimed its 10
th-consecutive CCIW Championship, amassing 65 total points. Carthage College finished runner-up with 55 points and Augustana College rounded out the top-three totaling 52 points.
In singles play, the Cardinals were highlighted by third-place finishes from
Reynolds Cross at the No. 4 position, and
Hanna Andersson at No. 6. Cross opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Millikin University's Elizabeth Breitbach, but stumbled in the semifinals to Wheaton's Kirstie White despite claiming the opening set 6-2, 6-7, 1-6.
Cross bounced back in the playback semifinals with an 8-5 win over Illinois Wesleyan University's Randi Wilson, before downing Eliza Barter of Carthage, 8-3 to claim third-place.
At the No. 6 position, Andersson opened with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Millikin's Amber Morgan, before falling in the semifinals 1-6, 3-6 to Wheaton's Erika Nelson. In the playback semifinals, Andersson shut out Elmhurst College's Allie Moran, 8-0 before clinching third-place with an 8-5 win over Rachel Kammerzelt of Augustana.
At No. 2 singles,
Miranda Grizaffi finished fourth, while
Kelsey Forkin and
Clare O'Connor also finished in fourth-place at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
In doubles competition, the combination of Grizaffi and O'Connor turned in a third-place performance at the No. 3 position, as the duo teamed up to defeat Illinois Wesleyan's Allie Spontak and Randi Wilson, 8-5 in the opening round. In the semifinals, the duo dropped a 7-9 decision, before rebounding to defeat Alexis Adams and Hannah Vaselaney of Elmhurst, 8-1. In the third-place match, Grizaffi and O'Connor fought off Chelsea Lavin and Miranda Pence of Augustana, 8-5.
At No. 2 doubles, the combination of Andersson and
Katie Drone turned in a fourth-place performance, going 2-2 on the weekend.
