Oct. 21, 2014 – Despite rallying for a thrilling 26-24 opening set victory, the North Central College women's volleyball team was unable to overcome 18
th-ranked Millikin University, dropping the final three sets to fall 3-1 Tuesday evening.
In the first set, the Cardinals (17-7, 1-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) faced set point as the Big Blue (23-5, 3-1 CCIW) held a 24-20 lead, but the North Central attack led by kills from
Cara Howell,
Kedryn Orrison and
Julie Laugel scored the final six points to turn the tables and claim the set 26-24.
The North Central offense never found its rhythm after the opening set, as the Cardinals trailed 6-1 early and eventually falling 25-12, finishing the set with just six kills compared to the 15 in set number one.
Set three was much of the same for North Central, as the Big Blue broke open a 6-6 tie and took a 20-12 lead, forcing a Cardinal timeout while ultimately taking the set 25-17.
The Cardinals battle tough in the fourth set, but with the two teams were knotted 23-23 North Central ran out of steam as Millikin rallied with a kill by Jade Becker and a Christina Capuani service forced a bad set to give the Big Blue the 25-23 victory.
Orrison and Laugel each finished with a team-high nine kills, while
Laura Kluk added 26 assists and 15 digs.
Jill Galovic ended with a game-high 22 digs, while
Olivia Hanley added three service aces.
