Oct. 29, 2014 -
The North Central College men's soccer team lost a crucial matchup with Millikin University 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals (9-7-1) seemed to be able to find some success defensively against the Big Blue (8-7-1) in the first period. The Cardinals pressured the visitors into heavy traffic situations where the ball would be turned over. The team was also able to push offensively by firing up a total of 23 shots for the match compared to the Big Blue's 11.

The team was able to hold off the opposition and take advantage of the over-aggressive Big Blue by drilling a shot in the back of the net in the 31st minute. Freshman forward Ryan O'Deen (2) took control of the ball up the left side of the field while drawing the defense away to place a perfect pass for sophomore John Kissel (1) to score his first goal of the season and make the score 1-0.

The Big Blue came into the second period with some smarter play and were able to score early in the second period in the 52nd minute. Junior defender Nick Abel found a clearing in the defense and was able to put one in the goal to tie the match 1-1.

The match looked evenly matched with both teams taking the 1-1 score deep into the game. Finally, the Cardinals took advantage of the confused Big Blue defense in the 80th minute when junior Matt Koth (7) played the ball off of his chest and was able to knock it far enough ahead for junior Evan Landmark (4) to drill a shot of his own into the net to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

The Big Blue responded pretty quickly when freshman Dylan Hottsmith scored a late goal in the 84th minute when he broke through the Cardinal defense. This goal tied up the match at 2-2 and the teams would take this score into overtime.

Unfortunately, the overtime would not last very long with the Big Blue's Hottsmith finding the back of the net yet again in the 94th minute and winning it for them 3-2. The Cardinals drop their record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) to 2-4.

The Cardinals continue play on Nov.1 when they visit Illinois Wesleyan University (7-11) in Bloomington at 3:30 P.M. Live in game statistics and video can be accesed by clicking HERE.
