LISLE, Ill. (Oct. 31, 2014) –
Opening play in its final tournament of the season, the North Central College women's volleyball team stumbled at the hands of Dominican University and the University of Chicago, 3-0 in a pair of matches at the Benedictine University Eagle Classic.

In the opening match, Dominican claimed the opening four points of the first set, but the Cardinals battled back to knot the score 13-13 on a Cara Howell kill.  The rest of the set was all Stars (22-8), scoring 11 of the next 12 points and eventually taking the set 25-17.

North Central (18-13) trailed a majority of the second set, but rallied from 15-17 down to take a 20-18 lead behind a pair of kills from Kedryn Orrison, as well as a kill from Claire Vrabec and a service ace off the hand of Howell.  The Cardinal momentum would not last long as Dominican rebounded to score eight of the final nine points to win the set 25-21.

Set three was all Dominican as the Cardinals never led and the Stars closed out the match scoring the final six points of the set, claiming a 25-16 victory.

Dominican finished the match with 40 kills to just 13 attack errors, while the Cardinals tallied 29 kills and 20 attack errors.  Orrison led the offensive attack with 10 kills, while Laura Kluk added 25 assists and seven digs.

In the nightcap against Chicago, the Maroon offensive attack was too much to handle, finishing the match with 40 kills opposed to 12 attack errors, while the Cardinals ended with 25 kills and 22 attack errors.

Trailing 18-12 in the opening set, the Cardinal offense found its groove as some tough serving from Vrabec kept the Maroons on its heels, attributing to a service ace and a pair of attack errors, drawing the North Central to within one, 18-17.

The Cardinal momentum stalled there however, as Chicago claimed seven of the final nine points of the set, taking a 25-19 win.

The second set was much of the same struggle for the Cardinals offensively, as Chicago jumped out to a 10-5 lead, forcing a North Central timeout.  The Maroons (21-11) kept the pressure on for the remainder of the set, cruising to a 25-16 victory.

Facing a 12-11 deficit midway through set three, the Maroon outscored North Central, 13-4 over the final 27 points to close out the set 25-15.

Vrabec led the Cardinal attack with six kills, while Kluk finished with 19 assists and a team-high 12 digs.

North Central continues play at the Benedictine Eagle Classic tomorrow, squaring off against DePauw University at 10 am, followed by Benedictine at 12 pm.  The link to live statistics is available HERE.
