Oct. 4, 2014 - North Central College won a hard-fought 2-1 overtime match against Carthage College on Saturday.
The leading goal-scorer for the conference, junior
Matt Koth (9), delivered again for the Cardinals (7-3-1) in overtime to get their first conference win of the season against the Red Men (5-6). The play was back and forth throughout most of the match with both sides playing aggressively on defense.
The first score of the game came quickly from senior
Lucas Habeeb (4) in the second minute. Habeeb broke free from the crowd and pushed the ball towards the goal while faking out the Red Men's goalie and netted it in the far corner to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
After halftime, both teams continued their stingy defensive play but in the 52nd minute Red Men forward Michael Dombrowski scored off a pass from Filip Dyminski. This tied the score up at 1-1 and the match became a struggle from there.
Although the Red Men put up 14 shots to the Cardinal's five, the game did not depict that specific part of the box score. Each side made it extremely difficult to get the ball anywhere near the goal.
The teams took the 1-1 tie into overtime and things played out well for the Cardinals. Koth, the leading goal-scorer, was shut out for most of the match. However, in the 95th minute, he took an inbounds from senior
Pat Rourke (2) and rocketed a shot past the defenders to win the game 2-1.
