Nov. 4, 2014 – Sending out its seniors in thrilling fashion, the North Central College women's volleyball team played the role of spoiler Wednesday night, knocking off Illinois Wesleyan University, 3-2 as the Titans were undone in its quest to secure the fourth and final spot in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament on the last day of the regular season.
North Central (20-14, 2-5 CCIW) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match behind 25-23 and 25-19 victories in the opening two sets, but the Titans (20-12, 3-4 CCIW) did not going down easy, rallying to claim the next two sets to force a decisive fifth set.
The Cardinals trailed 5-1 early on in set number three, leading to a North Central timeout. Following the stoppage in play, the Cardinals responded by winning 9 of the next 14 points, highlighted by a pair of kills from
Julie Laugel and two key blocks from
Kedryn Orrison, knotting the score 10-10 and forcing an Illinois Wesleyan timeout.
After the two teams traded the next four points,
Cara Howell gave the hosts a 13-12 lead with a kill off a set from
Laura Kluk, leading to another Titan timeout. Kyleigh Block tied up the score with a kill following the Illinois Wesleyan timeout, but the Cardinals were not to be denied as Howell put home the largest of her 15 kills on the evening and
Claire Vrabec followed up with the game-winning kill on the next point giving North Central the 15-13, fifth set victory.
Orrison wrapped up her stellar career with a season-high 16 kills, while adding 10 total blocks. Howell and Laugel also finished with double-digit kills, recording 15 and 12, respectively. Kluk tallied a season-high 47 assists on the evening to go along with 16 digs, six kills and five total blocks.
Orrison ends her career ranked in the top-ten in multiple categories on the program's all-time list, including fourth in career blocks (274), eighth in career kills (823) and career service aces (114).
Jessie Fiala wrapped up her career ranked sixth on the all-time digs list with 1,203.
