Sept. 19, 2014 – Already surpassing last season's win total, the North Central College women's volleyball team claimed a pair of non-conference victories over Benedictine University and Lake Forest College on Friday night, improving to 13-2 so far this season.
In the opening match against Benedictine, North Central controlled the tempo most of the first set, as
Kedryn Orrison eventually capped off the 25-21 win with a service ace, one of her team-high three.
In set number two, the Cardinals (13-2) found themselves down 24-22 late in the set, but Orrison and
Cara Howell teamed up on two consecutive blocks to knot the score at 24. The two teams traded points before North Central broke open a 26 all tie on a kill by Howell , while
Katie Connolly's service forced an Eagle attack error for the final point, giving North Central a 28-26 win.
The third set was all North Central as the Cardinals jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back, clinching the match with a 25-10 third set win.
Claire Vrabec led the Cardinal attack with 18 kills in the opener, while
Laura Kluk finished with a game-high 36 assists and 15 digs.
Jill Galovic also added 15 digs for the North Central defense, while the Cardinals totaled 11 service aces.
In the nightcap against Lake Forest, North Central cruised to a 25-18 win in the opening set, but the Cardinals lost all momentum in the second set eventually falling 25-17.
North Central bounced back nicely in the third set, dominating from the opening serve. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, the Cardinals increased the lead to as many as 14 points down the stretch.
Kluk paced the Cardinal offense with nine kills and 28 assists in game two, while Orrison added nine kills and
Julie Laugel chipped in eight. Galovic finished with a team-high 10 digs and three service aces.
North Central plays host to Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 pm inside Gregory Arena.
