WHEATON, Ill. (Sept. 30, 2014) – Despite a convincing 25-12 victory in the opening set, the North Central College women's volleyball team was unable to hang on, dropping three straight sets and ultimately falling 3-1 to Wheaton College, Tuesday night in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) opener.
The Cardinals (14-3, 0-1 CCIW) cruised to the first set victory, taking a 9-2 lead early on behind kills from
Kedryn Orrison,
Claire Vrabec and
AnnMarie Bachmann as well as a service ace by
Jill Galovic. North Central went on to score the final six points of the match, powered by three kills off the attack from Vrabec to claim the set.
Tied 13-13 midway through set number two, the Thunder (5-11, 1-0 CCIW) took advantage of two Cardinal s' 34 total attack errors to take a two-point lead and would not surrender the lead the remainder of the set as North Central was only able to score back-to-back points once down the stretch.
In set three the match was back and forth as both teams found themselves tied 17-17, and once again the Thunder took advantage of a Cardinal attack error, while tacking on a service ace to take a 20-10 lead and eventually claim the set 25-19.
North Central held the lead throughout a majority of the fourth set, but the resilient Wheaton attack mounted a six-point comeback to tie the match 21-21 and would carry the momentum down the stretch to win the set 25-23.
Julie Laugel paced the Cardinal offense with 10 kills, while Orrison and Vrabec each added nine.
Laura Kluk totaled 38 assists on the evening to go along with 15 digs, while Galovic finished with a team-high 25 digs.
North Central continues CCIW play Oct. 7, traveling to Augustana College at 7 pm.
