GALESBURG, Ill. (Jan. 10, 2015) – The North Central College wrestling team saw a successful trip to Knox College Chuck Porter Duals on Saturday, going 2-1 with its sole loss coming against Simpson College (Iowa), which was the only team to be undefeated on the day.
The Cardinals' record placed them second out of six teams at the duals.
The Cardinals started the day with a convincing 33-6 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Indiana). They took this momentum into the second dual against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and notched another win with a 24-10 final result. In the last dual of the day, the Cardinals fell to Simpson , 19-15.
In the opening win against Calumet, the Cardinals won eight of 10 matches with a trio of victories coming by forfeit. Mike Bikulcius started the match against Louis Escobedo and earned a 9-2 decision at 125 pounds. Nathan Segal (149), Eric Kirkman (165), Filiberto Diaz-Duran (197) and Dylan Mahler (285) all won by decision.
The Cardinals followed up with a 24-10 victory over Wisconsin-Platteville, as North Central was victorious in seven of 10 weight classes. Brandon Malone (133 pounds), Howard Beatty (141) and Kirkman (165) all won by major decision, while Segal (149) won with a 4-2 decision in overtime. At 184, Pizzo won with a 4-2 decision over Trent Larson and at 285, Mahler earned a 7-5 decision over Brandon Boyle.
The Cardinals saw tough competition in their final dual of the day against Simpson. Bikulcius (125) tried to set the tone by defeating Ethan Pellegrino by fall at 0:56. Segal (149), Blake Olson (157) and Mahler (285) also provided the Cardinals with wins in the last dual. Segal earned a 3-1 decision over Jason Clark while Blake Olson won a 5-3 decision in overtime against Jake Mize. Mahler wrapped up the day for the Cardinals with a 4-2 decision over Colby Vlieger.
North Central hosts Concordia University Wisconsin in a dual to be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. inside Gregory Arena.
