Jan. 24, 2015 – The North Central College wrestling team traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Border Brawl Duals on Saturday and found themselves up against tough competition, including the second-ranked hosts.

The first dual of the day pitted the Cardinals against the Cornell College Rams (Iowa) and resulted in a 25-17 North Central loss. The Cardinals' Brandon Malone grabbed the first win of the day at the 133-pound class over the Rams' Bryan Walsh with a 16-0 technical fall.

At 141, Layten Binion saw some success as well when he went up against the Rams' Jared Brathor, winning in a 3-2 decision.

The Cardinals' Blake Olson won at 157 with his pin of the Rams' Josh Martin in 2:38. Dylan Mahler also won at 285 with a 5-0 decision over Eric Tucker.

As soon as the match was over, the Cardinals had to turn their attention to an even tougher matchup in the No. 2-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. The Cardinals were unable to get into the win column and came out on the short end of a 38-0 defeat.

The Cardinals would face the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds in the third and fourth duals of the day and they saw much more success than in the previous two, defeating Oshkosh, 51-3, and Eau Claire, 27-21.

Malone (133) took the first match with Jonathan Flores of Oshkosh by pin in 1:24. Binion (141) also would pin his Oshkosh opponent, Craig Mason, in 6:19. Olson (157), Marcotte (174) and Mahler (285) all won with impressive pins as well. Olson pinned Lance Arendt in 1:31, Marcotte pinned Michael Berg in 4:06 and Mahler (285) pinned Matthew Vaneskey in 1:55.

Malone (133), Binion (141) and Segal (149) won by forfeit in their matches against Eau Claire and Olson (157) finished his match with the Blugolds' Robert Rocole by pinning him in 1:27.

Mahler (285) finished the day off for the Cardinals with a 3-2 decision over Justin Karkula of Eau Claire and helped the Cardinals seal the win.

The Cardinals went 2-2 on the day and improved their overall record to 6-5.

The Cardinals next hit the mats Friday and Saturday at the Pete Wilson Invitational hosted at Wheaton College. Action begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday and at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, all links to live stats and results can be found at northcentralcardinals.com
