Naperville, Ill. (Oct. 21, 2015) – A penalty kick by senior midfielder
Evan Landmark, combined with a strong defensive effort, propelled the North Central College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Collegiate Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) foe Augustana on Wednesday night, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Landmark's penalty kick came in the 84th minute. It was an amalgamation of the hard work and scoring opportunities the Cardinals created, with 8 of their 11 shots coming in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper
Justin De Boer was also brilliant, recording a clean sheet and six saves for the match. His importance to the win and to the team's hot-streak in conference play cannot be understated.
After a second half that saw the teams evenly-matched, the second half belonged to the Cardinals. In the 55
th minute, a header from senior forward
Matt Koth barely sailed over the crossbar, then in the 66
th minute the Cardinals would again almost score via header, this time sophomore defender missed just left.
The Vikings were lucky the margin was not larger, as Landmark and senior midfielder
Joey Faleni both came close to scoring in the 85
th and 86
th minutes.
Sitting 3-1 in conference play, the early season tests have paid dividends for the Cardinals. Playing against and competing with several nationally-ranked teams has helped the Cardinals finish the season out strongly, and make this run at the conference tournament.
The Cardinals next game is against Wheaton College in a CCIW matchup in Wheaton, on Saturday, Oct. 24th, with game time at 7:00 pm. Live stats and video can be found at the
