FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEContact: Elliott Carr, Sports Information Graduate Assistant, 630-637-5302 Box ScoreOct 31., 2015 – Despite creating more scoring opportunities than their opponents, the North Central College men's soccer team were defeated by College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) foe Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, at Benedetti-Wehrli Field.
After surrendering 2 goals to the Titans in the first, the Cardinals were able to bounce back in the 50
th minute, thanks to senior forward
Matt Koth, who scored his 4
th goal of the season, courtesy of an assist from junior midfielder
Chandler Olah. Koth was also highly unlucky not to score his second goal of the match in the 61
st minute, if not for a save by Titans goalkeeper Erick Eklin.
While a comeback appeared to be in the making for the Cardinals, it was not to be, as the Titans scored again in the 85
th minute. Senior midfielder Jimmy Connolly scored off a corner kick from senior defender Eric Gilbert, putting the game out of reach.
The Cardinals ended the game with a flurry of shots, as Olah missed just left in the 78
th minute, freshman midfielder had a shot saved in the 85
th minute, which was immediately followed by sophomore defender
Karl Bappert missing just left.
The score was not reflective of the Cardinals efforts today, as they outshot the Titans 13-8, which included 8 shots on goals to 5. It was just an inability to capitalize on the several scoring opportunities that held the Cardinals back, as they executed their game plan effectively.
The Cardinals place in the conference tournament will now be determined by results of other CCIW games tonight.
