Nov. 18, 2015 – Opening College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) competition against a nationally ranked opponent, the North Central College wrestling team dropped a dual to 30
th-ranked Augustana College, 26-12 on Wednesday inside Gregory Arena.
North Central began the match in an early 6-0 hole after forfeiting the 125 pound weight class and was never able to overcome the Viking lead, as Augustana (1-0), ranked No. 30 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) top-30 poll, claimed six of the 10 weight classes, including a fall and two major decision in addition to the forfeit.
The Cardinals (1-1, 0-1 CCIW) won each of their four matches by decision, as
Layten Binion defeated Collin Tomkins, 7-1 at 141, while
Ben Williamson cut the Viking lead 9-6 with a 5-4 decision over Matt Sears at 149.
Augustana responded by winning four of the next five weight classes, including major decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, as well as a pin at 184 to take a commanding 26-9 with only the 285 pound weight class remaining.
Casey Greenberg finished the match with a 3-1 overtime victory over Ben Corlett at 285, while
Eric Kirkman was victorious earlier at 174 pounds, defeating Alex Bowers by a 13-9 decision.
North Central travels to the Concordia University Wisconsin Open on Saturday, Nov. 21 with matches slated to begin at 9 a.m.
