COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 27, 2015) – Struggling to get anything going offensively, the North Central College women's basketball team finished a season-low 12 percent from three-point range as the Cardinals fell to Augsburg College, 80-71 in the opener of the Colorado College Thanksgiving Classic.
The Cardinals (1-3) shot just 28 percent from the floor (25-89), including a 6-of-49 clip from three-point range, the first time this season North Central has been held to single-digit three-point field goals.
North Central led a majority of the first quarter, as a Therse Pettersson three-point play gave the Cardinals its largest lead, a 20-15 lead with under a minute to play in the opening frame.
Opening the second quarter, the Auggies (4-1) went on a 8-3 run to take a 26-25 advantage, squandering the Cardinals early lead and would hold the lead the remainder of the contest.
North Central trailed 42-34 at halftime, but opened the third quarter on a 8-0 run behind layups from
Jamie Cuny,
Lauren Hernandez, Petterson and
Erica Buck to draw even at 42.
The Cardinal offense just could not get over the hump however, as Augsburg responded with a run of its own, a 16-7 run over the next six minutes to take its largest lead so far 58-49.
Augsburg held the lead the remainder of the contest, while the closest the Cardinals came was a five-point margin midway through the fourth quarter.
Mayson Whipple and
Paula Zerante each finished with 12 points to lead the Cardinal offense, while Cuny turned in a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with six points, three assists and three blocks.
Augsburg's Jessica Lillquist led all players with 32 points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Hannah Steinhouse also finished with a double-double, adding 11 points and 10 boards.
