Box ScoreSep. 30, 2015 (Naperville, Ill.) – For the second game in a row, the North Central College men's soccer team were able to force double-overtime, but again suffered defeat in the dying moments of the game, as they were beaten 1-0 by Lake Forest at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals had several scoring opportunities throughout the match, and outshot and outplayed the Foresters for much of the game. Head Coach
Matt Klosterman's high press tormented the Forester defenders, and the pace and athleticism of the Cardinals was able to generate 16 shots to Lake Forest's 13.
Despite the impressive play from the Cardinals, it was the Foresters who would score in the 103
rd minute. Senior John Palutsis scored off a header, courtesy of a corner kick from junior Ellis Rutilli. It was a cruel way for the game to end for the Cardinals.
North Central came awfully close to putting the game away in the first overtime, as senior
Joey Faleni had shots in the 94
th and 98
th minutes, while sophomore
Jon Borzick shot in the 92
nd minute, with the ball sailing just high of the crossbar.
Faleni and Borzick were dangerous in attack for the Cardinals throughout the entire match. Borzick was unlucky not to score in the 16
th minute, while Faleni found himself unlucky in the 7
th, 22
nd, and 24
th minutes.
While the win would have done wonders for the Cardinals heading into conference play, many positives can be taken from taking back-to-back quality opponents to double-overtime.
The Cardinals next game is Saturday October 3rd, when they open conference play at Carthage College in Kenosha. Live in game statistics and video can be accessed by clicking
