Hanover Box ScoreST. LOUIS, Mo. (Sept. 5, 2015) – Finishing 4-0 at the Washington University in St. Louis ASICS Invite, the North Central College women's volleyball team downed Webster University, 3-1 to open day two, before sweeping Hanover College, 3-0 in the nightcap to improve to 6-0 this season.
In the opener against Webster (1-4), the two teams traded leads throughout the set but North Central came on late as a Gorlok ball handling error gave the Cardinals a 24-22 lead. Webster did not go down lightly, however, rallying for three straight points to quickly turn the tables and take a 25-24 advantage.
After a Webster attack error held off set point, the Cardinals took advantage of another Gorlok attack error to take a 26-25 lead. Now holding set point,
Laura Kluk quickly ended the match with a service ace to win the all-important first set.
The turning point in set two came with the score knotted 16-16, as a Cardinal service error and attack error, followed by a Webster kill gave the Gorloks a three-point advantage and never relinquished the lead the remainder of the set, going on to win 25-20.
North Central jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead in the third set, highlighted by three kills from
Bridget White and a service ace from
Cara Howell that capped off a 5-0 run. The Cardinals extended the lead throughout the set, taking its largest lead on the match's final point as
Amanda Walker sealed the victory with a kill set up from Kluk.
The fourth set was back-and-forth and with the score tied 15-15, the Cardinals finished the match scoring 10 of the final 15 points, including four kills off the hand of
Julie Laugel and two more from White.
Laugel paced the Cardinal attack with 14 kills in the opener, while Howell added 13. Kluk finished with a 38 assists, while
Jill Galovic led the team with 19 digs.
North Central had to come from behind in the first set against Hanover (2-3). Trailing 23-24, Howell evened the score at 24 with a kill and White followed with two clutch kills to finish off the match 26-24.
Set number two was all North Central, after jumping out to a 10-3 lead the Cardinals increased its advantage to double-figures late and went on to take the set 25-13.
The momentum carried over to the third set for the Cardinal attack, finishing with an attack percentage of nearly 48 percent, North Central cruised to a 25-10 victory.
With her 26 assists against Hanover, Kluk moves into fourth-place on the program's all-time list with 3,104 career assists. Howell led all players with 15 kills in the nightcap and was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance over the weekend, while Galovic once again led the team with 19 digs.
North Central is back in action on Monday, Sept. 7, travelling to Blackburn College with the first set slated for 11 a.m.
